Iran to Boycott World Cup 2026 Draw in Washington After US Denies Visas

Iran says it will boycott the FIFA World Cup 2026 draw in Washington after several delegation members were denied US visas, reportedly including federation president Mehdi Taj.

Some other officials, including coach Amir Ghalenoei, were reportedly granted visas for the December 5 draw. Taj has urged FIFA chief Gianni Infantino to intervene.

The dispute comes amid longstanding US–Iran tensions and a recent regional escalation that contributed to the collapse of nuclear talks.

Iran to Boycott World Cup 2026 Draw in Washington After US Denies Visas

Iran has announced it will boycott the FIFA World Cup 2026 finals draw in Washington after the United States refused visas to several members of its delegation, the Iranian football federation said on Friday.

The federation's spokesperson told state media:

"We have informed FIFA that the decisions taken have nothing to do with sports, and the members of the Iranian delegation will not participate in the World Cup draw."

Federation president Mehdi Taj was reported among those denied visas. Taj has criticised the decision as politically motivated and has urged FIFA president Gianni Infantino to intervene, saying FIFA should press the US to reverse what he called a non-sporting stance.

Other delegation members — including coach Amir Ghalenoei — were reportedly granted visas and expected to attend the draw on December 5. Iran qualified for the 2026 tournament in March, securing a fourth consecutive appearance and their seventh overall.

Sporting context

Iran has yet to progress beyond the World Cup group stage. One of the team’s most celebrated results remains a 2-1 victory over the United States at the 1998 World Cup in France; the U.S. later beat Iran 1-0 at the 2022 World Cup.

Political backdrop

The visa dispute unfolds against decades of strained US–Iran relations and recent regional tensions. High-level nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington were underway earlier in the year but collapsed after a mid‑June escalation in which strikes on Iranian targets sparked a 12‑day conflict; the situation included reported US strikes on some Iranian facilities.

FIFA has not publicly confirmed receipt of Iran’s formal notification of non-attendance. It remains unclear whether the international governing body will seek to mediate or alter arrangements for the draw.
