U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the Supreme Court is proceeding cautiously in a lawsuit challenging the legality of former President Donald Trump's tariffs. He noted substantial revenues have been collected and that the plaintiffs' case is not "open and shut." Greer warned the tariffs have created a "new trade order" and said the court appears mindful of the issue's national importance.

WASHINGTON, Feb 3 — The Supreme Court is taking a measured approach as it considers a lawsuit that challenges the legality of former President Donald Trump's broad tariff program, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said on Tuesday.

Asked why the justices had not yet issued a ruling, Greer told CNBC that substantial revenue has already been collected under the tariffs and that the plaintiffs' claim is not an "open and shut case."

"We've built a new trade order on the back of these tariffs," Greer said. "So the stakes are enormous, and I think the court ... is being very careful and considerate as to how they deal with this issue of extreme national interest."

Greer's remarks come amid continuing legal and political debate over the scope and economic impact of those duties. The outcome could affect U.S. trade policy, government revenues and relations with trading partners.
