NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY — On November 13, Luzerne County Community College students and faculty marked National Roentgen Day, honoring Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, the physicist who discovered X‑rays. 28/22 News reporter Joe Mason visited the campus to cover the event.

Dental hygiene students combined coursework with creativity, preparing themed foods and dressing in X‑ray inspired costumes. The campus decorations reinforced the theme — radiation symbols, skeletons and a palette of black, white and gray to mimic radiographic imagery.

We’ll see images of radiation danger symbols — skeletons and skulls; black and white, and many shades of gray.

First‑year dental hygiene student Emily Kosciuk described her costume as a periapical radiograph, complete with representations of premolars, molars and even a dilacerated root. The celebration also included friendly competitions with awards for best appetizer, best dessert and best costume.

Kyle Baldeo, a second‑year dental hygiene student, took first place for his costume. Baldeo’s outfit represented "Dexter," a special training mannequin used in the dental program to practice X‑rays and sensor placement on patients.

Organizers say events like National Roentgen Day reinforce the importance of radiography in dental education and provide students a fun, hands‑on way to celebrate their learning. Luzerne County Community College has observed the day for more than 20 years and aims to continue the tradition.
