US and China Strike $30B Reciprocal Tariff Deal, Launch Formal AI Dialogue — Xi Says Thucydides Trap Can Be Avoided
US, China Agree To A $30B Reciprocal Tariff Cut Deal And Launch A Dialogue On AI As Xi Reiterates Two Countries Can Overcome ‘Thucydides Trap’

The United States and China ended a three-day summit with an eight-point agreement that includes a $30 billion reciprocal tariff cut, the creation of a bilateral trade council, and a formal U.S.-China dialogue on artificial intelligence with first talks slated for November. Leaders extended a trade truce past the Nov. 10 deadline to allow more time for broader negotiations. Xi Jinping urged no conflict or confrontation and said the so-called "Thucydides Trap" can be overcome, while both sides reiterated their stance on Iran and international waterways.

U.S. and Chinese leaders concluded a three-day summit with an eight-point consensus that aims to stabilize strained economic ties and create formal channels for cooperation, Beijing's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

At the center of the package is a reciprocal tariff-reduction arrangement valued at $30 billion. The two sides also backed the creation of a bilateral trade council and agreed to carry forward outcomes from earlier negotiations in Kuala Lumpur.

AI Dialogue And Incident Communication Channel

Both governments committed to a formal, ongoing dialogue on artificial intelligence to assess opportunities and risks. China’s foreign ministry said the first round of AI consultations is scheduled for November and that the two countries will establish a communication channel for incidents involving AI systems.

Trade Truce And Wider Cooperation

Washington and Beijing agreed to extend an existing trade truce by two months, moving its expiration beyond the previously scheduled Nov. 10 deadline to give negotiators more time to pursue a broader agreement. Officials described the package as intended to cement the pause in escalation and create mechanisms to manage future disputes.

Security, Navigation And Leadership Remarks

President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping reiterated a shared position that Iran should honor its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons and emphasized that international waterways should not be treated as toll-collecting channels.

"China and the United States must hold the line of no conflict and no confrontation between the two countries. The Thucydides Trap can be overcome," Xi said during remarks at the White House. He urged continued dialogue, efforts to seek common ground, and steps to build mutual trust despite different systems and national conditions.

Market Reaction

Market moves were modest in after-hours trading: the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) rose 0.09%, the Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) gained 0.12%, and the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust (DIA) was up 0.04%.

Taken together, the measures — tariff reductions, a trade council and an AI communication channel — are intended to provide more structured negotiation pathways and crisis-management tools that could reduce the likelihood of future escalation.
