The U.S. Department of Justice sued Virginia on Jan. 16, alleging the state failed to provide its complete voter registration lists, the DOJ said in a statement. The complaint seeks a federal court order to compel Virginia to produce the records and enforce federal access requirements. If successful, the lawsuit could force disclosure of the missing registrations or lead to other court-ordered remedies.
DOJ Sues Virginia, Accuses State Of Withholding Complete Voter Registration Rolls

Jan. 16 — The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the Commonwealth of Virginia on Friday, alleging the state failed to produce its full voter registration lists, the DOJ said in a statement.
The complaint asks a federal court to compel Virginia to turn over the requested records and to enforce federal requirements governing access to voter registration data. The DOJ said the state’s production was incomplete, though the department did not provide further details in its statement.
Voter registration lists are used by campaigns, researchers and election officials to verify registrations and manage elections. If the court grants the DOJ’s request, Virginia could be ordered to provide the missing records or face other judicial remedies.
