The Trump Factor

Lula has framed parts of his campaign around national sovereignty and criticized what he describes as foreign interventionism, implicitly targeting the influence of US President Donald Trump. Trump has publicly cheered rightward shifts in neighboring countries and hosted Flavio Bolsonaro at the White House earlier this year, though he has not formally endorsed him.

Scandals, Investigations And Voter Fatigue

The campaign has been dominated less by policy debate and more by revelations tied to jailed banker Daniel Vorcaro, accused of orchestrating one of Brazil's largest financial frauds and alleged to have questionable links to powerful figures. Investigations have touched Flavio Bolsonaro over suspected corruption and money laundering related to the financing of a biopic about his father that prosecutors say was bankrolled by Vorcaro.

Reports of ties between Vorcaro and a senior Supreme Court justice have further dented public confidence in institutions. "The campaign was marked by scandals rather than policy proposals," said Joscimar Silva of the University of Brasilia's Institute of Political Science. "There is voter fatigue. People think everyone is corrupt."

What Voters Are Saying

Many Brazilians remain undecided. "I'm still undecided. Because corruption is so blatant. It's difficult," said Joel da Silva, a 42-year-old doorman in Rio de Janeiro who has voted for both Lula and Jair Bolsonaro in prior elections. Others highlight crime and personal insecurity as the decisive issues: "It has to end. Today, in Brazil, organized crime is in charge," said Elias Camisero, 74, a tailor.

In response to tightening polls, Lula made last-minute appeals to working-class voters by increasing social benefits and banning most online betting, a measure framed as protecting households from gambling-related debt. Supporters praise his record: "Without wishing to idolize him, he is one of the greatest presidents this country has ever had," said Israel Gomes, a hotel manager in Brasilia.

With trust in institutions shaken and voters fatigued by scandal, the election is likely to hinge on turnout and whether undecided voters break decisively for one candidate. A close runoff on October 25 is the most probable scenario.
