54-Year-Old Arrested After Throwing Molotov Cocktails at USCIS Office in Los Angeles

A 54-year-old man was arrested after he hurled unlit Molotov cocktails at officers outside a USCIS office in Los Angeles; the bottles did not ignite and no one was injured. Authorities said the suspect arrived armed with multiple Molotovs, threw two at officers and was carrying four knives and a Leatherman tool when arrested. DHS described the man as having an extensive criminal history and said he made threats while in custody. Officials framed the episode as part of a recent rise in targeted attacks on immigration officers and said the investigation is ongoing.

A 54-year-old man was arrested Monday after throwing unlit Molotov cocktails at officers posted outside a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office building in Los Angeles, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said. The bottles did not ignite, and there were no injuries or damage to federal property.

Attack and arrest

DHS said the suspect arrived "armed with multiple Molotov cocktails" and began shouting derogatory remarks about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He threw two bottles at officers guarding the building and was immediately taken into custody.

Weapons and statements

Authorities said the man was carrying four knives and a Leatherman multi-tool at the time of his arrest. While in custody, he allegedly told officials he wanted to "blow up the building" and to "spray down" the officers, and repeated abusive comments about ICE personnel.

Background and investigation

DHS did not identify the suspect in its release but described him as having an extensive criminal history, including an attempted murder charge in 1987, an armed robbery with a firearm charge in 1991, and a charge for annoying or molesting a minor in 2007. Federal authorities said the arrest came days after shootings that wounded two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., and amid what DHS characterized as an uptick in targeted attacks on immigration officers.

Official response

"This was a clear and deliberate attack on federal law enforcement," Tricia McLaughlin, an assistant secretary at DHS, said in a statement. She said the incident reflects the persistent threats that officers face and warned that anyone who assaults law enforcement will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

DHS officials said the department continues to investigate the incident, the suspect's background and potential motives as federal prosecutors consider charges. No additional details on charges have been released.
