Hours earlier, DHS officials reported a separate confrontation in which an undocumented Venezuelan migrant was shot in the leg by an ICE officer after allegedly attacking the agent with a shovel. The Department of Homeland Security says a man was arrested in Minneapolis Wednesday night after allegedly assaulting a federal immigration agent while carrying a handgun and a box of ammunition. The arrest followed an earlier incident in which a migrant allegedly attacked another agent with a shovel and was shot in the leg, which helped spark renewed riots. DHS officials condemned violent behavior at the protests, while local leaders and former President Donald Trump traded sharp criticisms and discussed the potential use of the Insurrection Act to restore order.

The Department of Homeland Security said a man was arrested Wednesday night in Minneapolis after allegedly assaulting a federal immigration agent while carrying a handgun and a box of ammunition. The arrest occurred amid renewed unrest that followed an earlier, separate confrontation in which a migrant from Venezuela reportedly attacked another agent with a shovel and was shot in the leg.

Incident Details

According to DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, the suspect arrived at the protest carrying a firearm and a box of ammunition in a bag and allegedly threatened law enforcement while pointing to the bag. DHS says that after crowd-control tactics were used to calm an increasingly volatile scene, the man kicked a metal smoke canister toward officers and pushed one of them; he was then arrested on an assault charge.

"Last night during a riot in Minneapolis, a U.S. citizen was arrested for assaulting officers while carrying a firearm," McLaughlin told Fox News Digital. "While being arrested, he stated he had a firearm, which was located along with a box of ammunition. He was not carrying his concealed carry permit."

Background And Broader Unrest

The arrest came after several days of unrest in Minneapolis related to the recent death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good during an interaction with an ICE agent. That incident sparked protests and clashes between federal officers and demonstrators across the city.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called for peace amid violent protests directed toward federal authorities.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem described Good as a "domestic terrorist," saying she used her vehicle as a weapon after obstructing ICE agents on the roadway. Local officials reacted strongly: Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey demanded that ICE "get the f--- out of Minneapolis," and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz criticized DHS on social media, calling Noem's account part of a "propaganda machine."

Federal Response And Political Fallout

On Thursday, former President Donald Trump posted on TRUTH Social that he would consider invoking the Insurrection Act if federal officers continued to be attacked and local authorities did not restore order. If invoked, the Insurrection Act—legislation first adopted in 1807—can authorize the deployment of federal troops or National Guard forces to assist in restoring public order.

Officials from DHS emphasized that the arrested individual did not have a concealed-carry permit on his person at the time of arrest and characterized the conduct as violent behavior outside the protections of lawful protest.

What’s Next

Authorities have not released the suspect’s name or additional charging details. Investigations into the earlier shooting and the circumstances surrounding Renee Nicole Good’s death are ongoing, and tensions in Minneapolis remain high as federal and local officials monitor the situation.
