USPS Deploys Over 2,600 Electric Vehicles as Fleet Electrification Accelerates

USPS reports it now operates more than 2,600 electric delivery vehicles as part of a push toward a zero-emission fleet. The agency has purchased 8,700 Ford E-Transit vans, with 2,010 currently in service at 65 sites, and 612 Oshkosh-built NGDVs deployed at 15 locations — 2,622 vehicles in service in total. Congress approved $3 billion in 2023 for EVs and charging infrastructure, including $1.2 billion specifically for vehicle purchases. USPS says these deployments represent an early phase of a longer fleet modernization effort.

USPS Deploys Over 2,600 Electric Vehicles as Fleet Electrification Accelerates

The U.S. Postal Service told Congress in a November 17 letter that it is operating more than 2,600 electric vehicles (EVs) for mail delivery as part of a broader effort to transition to a zero-emission fleet. The deployments combine commercially produced vans and specially built delivery vehicles designed for postal service needs.

USPS has purchased 8,700 Ford E-Transit vans in total; 2,010 of those are currently delivering mail from 65 sites. In addition, 612 electric Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDVs) built by Oshkosh Defense are serving at 15 locations, bringing the in-service total to 2,622 vehicles.

Congress provided $3 billion in 2023 to support EV purchases and charging infrastructure, including $1.2 billion specifically allocated for vehicle acquisitions. USPS said those federal funds are being used to buy vehicles and install the charging equipment needed to operate them at scale.

USPS framed the current deployments as an early phase of its fleet modernization plan; wider rollout will depend on continued vehicle deliveries, installation of charging infrastructure and operational logistics. The agency said it is working to balance deployment speed with reliability and the practical needs of local delivery operations.
