Explore Black Holes, Seasonal Traditions & Family Shows at UW–Stevens Point Planetarium in December

The Allen F. Blocher Planetarium at UW–Stevens Point is hosting public Sunday shows at 2 p.m. throughout December, each about one hour and featuring a 25-minute night-sky segment for central Wisconsin. Highlights include "Supermassive Black Holes" on Dec. 7 and "Season of Light" on Dec. 14, plus a family-friendly Junior Scientist program with a book reading. Admission is free (donations welcome); seating is first-come for 55 people and paid private shows are available for groups of eight or more. Outdoor stargazing is offered Mon–Wed evenings when conditions permit.

The Allen F. Blocher Planetarium at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point will present a lineup of public shows on Sundays in December. Performances begin at 2 p.m. and run about one hour; each program includes a 25-minute segment highlighting the current night sky over central Wisconsin.

December schedule

  • Dec. 7 — Supermassive Black Holes: Uncovering the Invisible
    An exploration of black hole physics, how they form and their role in galaxy evolution.
  • Dec. 14 — Season of Light
    A look at holiday customs from around the world and how they relate to the winter solstice and other astronomical events.

On Dec. 14 the planetarium will also present a Junior Scientist program, "Larry, Cat in Space," from 3:30–4:10 p.m., with a related book reading beginning at 3:00 p.m. This children’s session is offered in partnership with the UW–Stevens Point Museum of Natural History.

Admission, seating and group bookings

Admission to the shows is free and open to the public; donations are welcomed. Seating is first-come and accommodates up to 55 people. Groups of eight or more may arrange a private showing for a fee by calling 715-346-2208 or submitting the online request form linked below.

Location and parking

The planetarium is located on the second floor of the UW–Stevens Point Science Building at 2001 Fourth Ave. Visitor parking is available in Lot D behind the building. Parking is free in all university lots after 7 p.m. and on weekends.

Outdoor stargazing

Separate stargazing sessions are offered Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 8:30–10:00 p.m., weather permitting, on Colman Field (corner of Maria Street and Reserve Street). Observing nights will proceed only if skies are clear and the temperature is above 15°F (about -9°C).
