U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said President Donald Trump may select the next Federal Reserve chair as soon as next week.

Bessent told CNBC that the field has been cut to four candidates and that the president has spoken with each finalist.

The comments were made in Washington on Jan. 20 and are likely to draw close attention from markets and policymakers.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump could announce his choice for the next chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve as soon as next week, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Tuesday.

Speaking in a CNBC interview, Bessent said the search has been narrowed to four candidates and that the president has spoken with each of them.

"We are now down to four candidates," Bessent said, noting that Trump had talked to all finalists.

The remarks were made on Jan. 20 in Washington. The selection of the Fed chair is closely watched by markets and policymakers because the chair sets monetary policy priorities and influences interest-rate expectations.
