Britain will raise the maximum age for recalling military reservists by ten years to 65 and broaden recall criteria to include "warlike preparations." The reforms follow similar measures by European allies after Russia's invasion of Ukraine and US calls for greater European defence responsibility. Officials say the changes will strengthen readiness and align the UK with NATO partners; they are expected to take effect in spring 2027.

Britain announced on Thursday it will bolster its military reserve forces by increasing the maximum age at which former service personnel can be recalled by 10 years, raising the cap to 65 (previously 55). The government said it would also lower the legal threshold for recall to include "warlike preparations," broadening when veterans can be asked to return to service.

Several European countries, including France and Germany, have taken steps in recent years to expand their reserves following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, alongside pressure from the United States for Europe to shoulder more of its own defence burden. The UK reforms are presented as part of aligning Britain’s readiness with the approaches of many NATO partners.

What Changes?

- Maximum recall age raised to 65, increasing the pool of potentially available experienced personnel.
- Recall conditions widened to include "warlike preparations" rather than being limited to "national danger, great emergency or attack on the UK."

"These reforms will allow us to mobilise that talent rapidly when it matters most, strengthening our readiness and aligning with a similar approach many NATO forces are taking," said Paul Griffiths, the general leading the British effort.

The government said the changes are expected to come into force from spring 2027. Officials argue the move improves the UK's ability to respond quickly to emerging threats by drawing on experienced former personnel.
