Gunmen ambushed an IRGC patrol near Lar in Sistan and Baluchistan, killing three Revolutionary Guard members about 1,125 km southeast of Tehran. State media said the attackers remain at large and the Guard called them "terrorists" as it pursued the suspects. The border province, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, has a history of clashes between militants, smugglers and security forces; in August, security forces killed 13 militants after earlier attacks that left five police officers dead.

Gunmen ambushed a patrol of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchistan, killing three Guard members, state media reported.

Details of the Attack

The attack occurred near the city of Lar in a mountainous area about 1,125 kilometers (700 miles) southeast of Tehran, according to the official IRNA news agency. IRNA said the guardsmen were ambushed while on patrol but did not specify whether any other personnel were wounded.

Response and Responsibility

The IRGC said it was pursuing the attackers, whom it described as "terrorists," but the assailants remained at large and no group had claimed responsibility for the ambush, IRNA reported.

Regional Context

Sistan and Baluchistan, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, is one of Iran's least developed provinces and has periodically seen deadly clashes involving militants, armed smugglers and security forces. In August, Iranian security forces killed 13 militants in three separate operations, a week after militants had killed five police officers who were on patrol in the same province.

IRNA did not provide further details on the identities of the attackers or the exact circumstances of the ambush.

The IRGC's pursuit of the perpetrators is ongoing, and authorities have not released additional information about arrests or suspects.
