UAB Football Player Arrested, Charged with Attempted Murder and First‑Degree Assault After Teammates Stabbed

Daniel Israel Mincey, a 20-year-old member of the University of Alabama at Birmingham football program, was arrested Saturday and charged Monday with attempted murder and first-degree assault after two teammates were stabbed at the school's Football Operations Building hours before a scheduled game.

Jail records and university officials say Mincey, who is from Pompano Beach, Florida, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Saturday afternoon following a campus police arrest linked to the morning incident. He remained in custody Monday on $90,000 bail while court documents formalized the charges.

One criminal complaint alleges Mincey attempted to "intentionally cause the death" of teammate Jasire Peterson by stabbing him with a knife. A separate complaint charges him with first-degree assault for allegedly causing serious physical injury to Joshua Underwood by stabbing him.

We are currently focused on gathering information and reviewing the evidence, which has not yet been fully received,

said attorney David Bigney, who represents Mincey’s family, adding that it is too early in the case to make further public comments and asking for patience as the legal process proceeds.

University spokesperson Alicia Rohan said the incident occurred Saturday morning inside the Football Operations Building on UAB’s Birmingham campus. Both injured players were taken to a hospital; Rohan said they have been released and are recovering. "Our thoughts are with them and their families as they recover," she said.

Interim head coach Alex Mortensen said in remarks posted online that he has met with both injured players and that they are recovering at home; the team roster lists both as defensive linemen. Mortensen also said the program proceeded with Saturday’s game — a decision intended to allow seniors to play in their final contest — and praised the squad for coming together in a difficult moment.

Mincey appears to have been removed from the team's online roster. Team records previously listed him as a 6-foot-4 redshirt freshman who transferred to UAB in May from the University of Kentucky. The university has not released details about Mincey’s current status with the football program.

This remains an active investigation. Charges are allegations, and Mincey is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
