US Ambassador Mike Huckabee: Ceasefire with Hamas Is Holding Despite Fragile Moments
US Ambassador Mike Huckabee told NewsNation that the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is holding despite occasional fragile moments. The United States ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, said he is confident the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas remains in place, even as tensions continue to flare in the region.
Speaking on the program Elizabeth Vargas Reports, Huckabee addressed recent Israeli strikes across Gaza and other developments in the Middle East. He described a period of relative calm after more than a month during which he said he was regularly dodging ballistic missiles.
“There’s certainly going to be moments when things get very fragile. I don’t think any of us doubted that would be the case, but the ceasefire is holding,” Huckabee told NewsNation. “As someone who, for the first time in over a month, is no longer dodging ballistic missiles, it’s been a remarkable period of calm.”
Dozens of Palestinians were reported killed in the airstrikes; Israeli officials say those strikes were carried out in retaliation after gunmen opened fire on Israeli soldiers. Huckabee warned that Hamas has not entirely abandoned hostilities and defended Israel’s right to respond when attacked.
“Hamas has not completely given up, and I think Israel is within its rights. They have to strike back when they are attacked by Hamas, when they break out of these tunnels,” he said.
Huckabee also praised a regional peace initiative associated with former President Trump, saying it is progressing “very, very effectively” and that the Arab nations which met at Sharm El Sheikh to sign the agreement are “holding firm.”
While the ambassador emphasized that the situation remains fragile and subject to change, he characterized the current lull in direct attacks as a notable respite. His remarks underscore both cautious optimism and the continuing risk of renewed violence in the absence of a durable, enforceable settlement.
