A Bexar County grand jury has returned an indictment charging 57-year-old Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez with murder in the fatal shooting of actor Jonathan Joss Gonzales, best known for voicing John Redcorn on King of the Hill. The indictment, filed on Nov. 17, follows Alvarez’s arrest in June on a first-degree murder charge; he posted a $200,000 bond after his arrest.
What happened
Jonathan Joss, 59, was shot outside his San Antonio home on June 1. Authorities responded to reports of an active shooting at about 7 p.m. and found Joss lying “near the roadway.” Police identified Alvarez as Joss’ neighbor. According to a police report, Alvarez fled the scene in a vehicle but later confessed to killing Joss when detained and admitted he had “intentionally and knowingly discharged a weapon” at the actor. Investigators say the weapon was a rifle. One witness told police she observed Alvarez and Joss argue before the shooting.
Allegations of harassment and reaction
“My husband Jonathan Joss and I were involved in a shooting while checking the mail at the site of our former home. That home was burned down after over two years of threats from people in the area who repeatedly told us they would set it on fire. We reported these threats to law enforcement multiple times and nothing was done.”
Joss’ husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, told investigators he witnessed the shooting and said it followed years of harassment directed at the couple because of Joss’ sexuality. He described the harassment as openly homophobic and said the couple had reported threats to law enforcement after their home was burned down several months earlier. A public information officer with the San Antonio Police Department later said investigators found no evidence to classify Joss’ death as a hate crime.
Legal defense and next steps
Alvarez’s attorney has said his client acted in self-defense, asserting that Texas law allows people to defend themselves and others. An attorney for Alvarez did not immediately respond to requests for comment. With the grand jury indictment in place, the case will move forward through the local court system.
