Australian para-cyclist Paige Greco dies aged 28
Australian Paralympic champion Paige Greco has died aged 28. A joint statement from Paralympics Australia and AusCycling said Greco "passed away in her Adelaide home after experiencing a sudden medical episode" on Sunday.
"Paige meant everything to us. Her kindness, her determination and her warmth touched our family every single day. She brought so much joy and pride into our lives, and the pain of her passing is something we will carry forever. While we are devastated by her loss, we are incredibly proud of the person she was and the way she represented Australia." — Natalie Greco, mother
Born with cerebral palsy, Greco became one of Australia’s standout para-athletes. After switching from para-athletics to cycling in 2018, she burst onto the international scene at the 2019 UCI Track Para-cycling World Championships, where she set three world records and won two gold medals and a silver.
At the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Paralympics in 2021, Greco won the first gold medal awarded at the Games, breaking her own world record in the women’s C1-3 3,000-metre individual pursuit. She also took bronze medals in the road race and the time trial at Tokyo. In August she added another major result with a bronze in the C3 road race at the para-cycling World Championships in Belgium, according to BBC News.
Cameron Murray, chief executive officer of Paralympics Australia, paid tribute to Greco’s athletic excellence and character: "Paige was an extraordinary athlete, but more importantly, a remarkable person. Her kindness, quiet determination and ability to make people feel included will leave a lasting impression on many."
AusCycling chief executive Marne Fechner echoed those sentiments, calling Greco an "extraordinary athlete who achieved outstanding accomplishments at the highest levels of the sport" and noting that she touched lives with her positive spirit and courageous outlook.
Greco’s achievements across track and road racing, along with her leadership and warmth off the bike, made her a beloved figure in the para-sport community. Further details about the circumstances of her death and any memorial arrangements have not been released.
