Samantha Baillie, 33, an Australian mother of two, remains in critical condition after a head-on scooter collision in Bali on Dec. 28 that killed her partner, Bryce Alexander Black, 33. The couple was on a two-lane road in the early hours when the scooter reportedly overtook another vehicle and turned across the carriageway, colliding with a car traveling in the correct lane.

What Happened

According to an incident report obtained by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and Budung police, the crash occurred around 4:40 a.m. local time on a clear night with unobstructed visibility. Police say the scooter overtook the vehicle in front and turned right across the roadway, where it struck the oncoming car.

Injuries and Immediate Response

Black, who was driving the scooter, suffered a severe head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene. Baillie sustained multiple injuries and was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Reports indicate the couple did not have travel insurance. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the families.

"We send our deepest condolences to the families at this difficult time," a DFAT statement said.

Family, Support and Fundraising

Friend Savannah-Leigh Homer set up a GoFundMe to help cover Baillie’s ongoing medical care, outstanding hospital bills, medical repatriation to Australia and living expenses while she is unable to work. Homer, who traveled to Bali with Baillie’s mother, said Baillie works as a hairdresser and will be out of work for an extended period.

Homer described the trip as "meant to be a happy milestone" — Baillie’s first time leaving the country after starting a new chapter in her life. The fundraiser reached its initial goal rapidly, and Homer thanked donors for their "love, generosity and kindness" in an Instagram update.

Children and Next Steps

Homer has said Baillie is the sole custodial parent of her two children; Black also had a child. Baillie has not yet been able to return home or tell her children in person. The family is awaiting medical transfer back to Sydney, where Baillie is expected to undergo immediate surgery on her hands and continue recovery under specialists' care.

Friends and strangers have shared tributes and well-wishes online, urging privacy and compassion for the family during this difficult time.
