A 69-year-old Florida woman, Deborah Collier, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder after authorities say she allegedly tried to kill her 13-year-old great-granddaughter, who has cerebral palsy and requires round-the-clock care.
What Happened
According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, deputies began investigating after family members discovered a suicide note left by Collier at her DeLand, Florida, home on Dec. 29. Officers located Collier during a traffic stop and found the unconscious girl in the passenger seat.
Deputies observed white pill residue on the child and say she was unresponsive. In Collier's purse, authorities report they recovered prescription medication bottles and a typed note that allegedly stated Collier intended to end both her life and her great-granddaughter's life because of the perceived burden her care placed on the rest of the family.
Volusia County Sheriff's Office: Detectives learned the victim requires comprehensive, 24-hour care due to her disabilities. Collier and her husband have been her sole guardians since birth.
Victim's Condition and Family Context
The sheriff's office says the 13-year-old is currently in stable condition after having been given pills that authorities allege were intended to kill her. Investigators noted that the ongoing demands of full-time caregiving have contributed to significant stress in the family. Media reports also indicate Collier's husband has a heart condition and stress-related symptoms.
Charges and Investigation
Collier faces an attempted first-degree murder charge. It was not immediately clear whether she has entered a plea or retained legal counsel. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation; additional details have been reported by WESH and PEOPLE.
