The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has confirmed an outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza at a commercial poultry farm near Woodbridge, Suffolk. This is the fourth poultry premises in Suffolk to be affected this season and brings the total in East Anglia to eight cases so far, with most clustered near the Suffolk–Norfolk border.

About the virus
Avian influenza (H5N1) primarily infects birds but can occasionally affect other animals, including foxes, seals and otters. Defra says the risk to the general public remains very low.

Advice for the public and bird keepers

  • Do not touch or move any dead or sick wild birds. Report sightings to Defra or the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA).
  • Bird keepers should follow current housing orders and strict biosecurity measures—keep birds indoors where required, restrict access to flocks, and disinfect footwear and equipment.
  • Avoid handling wild birds or stray poultry, and keep pets away from wild carcasses.

Officials continue surveillance in the wider area. Local authorities and Defra will provide updates if the situation changes.

For the most reliable and up-to-date guidance, consult official Defra or APHA communications and local public health advice.
