Apple was the only major tech company absent from a White House lunch where top executives signed a voluntary "Superintelligence" accord calling for internal controls, audits and board-level oversight. Key leaders from Meta, Google, Nvidia, OpenAI, Anthropic, Amazon and Palantir attended. Apple did not comment; observers say the company remains involved in AI discussions but focuses on compact, on-device models and spends less on cloud AI infrastructure. The meeting followed a Trump executive order to use the term "Super Intelligence" in federal communications.
Apple Skips White House 'Superintelligence' Lunch as Tech Leaders Sign Voluntary Accord

Apple was the only major technology company absent from a White House lunch on Tuesday where President Donald Trump met with senior tech executives and witnessed the signing of a voluntary industry pact on advanced AI governance, according to CNBC and ABC News.
Who Attended: Executives present included Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, OpenAI COO Greg Brockman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and Palantir CEO Alex Karp with CTO Shyam Sankar, among others.
Neither Apple Executive Chairman Tim Cook nor Apple's new chief executive John Ternus attended the meeting. When CNBC asked for comment, neither Apple nor the White House replied.
What Was Signed
The executives endorsed a document titled "The White House Accord on Superintelligence: A Joint Commitment on Frontier SI Responsibilities." House Speaker Mike Johnson described the accord as voluntary, while President Trump called it "morally" binding. The agreement asks firms to implement internal controls, conduct audits, and establish independent, board-level oversight.
Altimeter Capital CEO Brad Gerstner said the attendees were the firms "really pushing the frontier on model development" and described Apple's absence as "inconsequential," adding that Apple is still "very much read in on all of this."
Why Apple Was Absent
Apple's AI strategy differs from the large, cloud-dependent models developed by so-called frontier AI labs. Many of Apple's models are compact and optimized to run locally on Apple hardware. The company also relies on partners for some model development and spends significantly less on AI infrastructure than major cloud providers such as Google, Microsoft, Meta and Amazon, the report noted.
Apple transitioned the CEO role from Tim Cook to John Ternus in September; Cook retained responsibility for government relations, including handling relations with the White House. Observers pointed out Cook had attended a White House state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping just days earlier, and Cook has made multiple public appearances at Trump administration events since the start of the president's second term.
Market And Context
Apple shares have risen roughly 22.5% year-to-date in 2026, outpacing the Nasdaq and many other megacap peers, CNBC reported.
The White House lunch followed an executive order signed by President Trump the previous day instructing federal agencies to replace the term "artificial intelligence" with "Super Intelligence" in official communications, a move that has stirred debate over terminology and policy focus.
