The 2026 Kennedy Center Honors will be held at Capital One Arena on December 7 after the Kennedy Center closed on September 15 for safety inspections and renovations following a partial ceiling collapse. This is the first time the nearly 50-year gala will be staged off-site. The relocation occurs amid a political and legal dispute since President Donald Trump took control of the center's board in February 2025 and tied renovation progress to a contested renaming effort that federal judges have repeatedly blocked.

The 2026 Kennedy Center Honors will be held at Capital One Arena on December 7 after the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts closed on September 15 for safety assessments and planned renovations following a partial ceiling collapse in the Grand Foyer. The relocation marks the first time in the nearly 50-year history of the Honors that the gala will be staged off-site.

The move comes amid a politically fraught and legally contested period for the institution since President Donald Trump took control of the Kennedy Center's board in February 2025. The board has backed a major renovation plan, while Mr. Trump has linked progress on the project to an ongoing legal fight over his effort to add his name to the building.

Center officials cited the foyer incident and subsequent engineering reviews as key reasons for the extended closure. The board described the building as unsafe for continued public occupancy while assessments and repairs proceed. The Honors traditionally take place in the Kennedy Center’s 2,300-seat Opera House; Capital One Arena can accommodate roughly 20,000 people.

Timeline

February 2025: Donald Trump assumed control of the Kennedy Center's board and was elected chair, replacing longtime board leader David Rubenstein. He said he planned to reshape the center’s programming and leadership.

Spring–Summer 2025: Several artists withdrew from or publicly criticized the Kennedy Center after the board change, and controversy grew as allies of Mr. Trump pushed for programming and management changes.

Late 2025: Plans for major renovations and institutional changes were advanced by the board. A separate dispute emerged over efforts to rename the facility to include Mr. Trump’s name despite the center being established by Congress as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

2026 (ongoing): Lawsuits over governance, the proposed renaming and renovation plans continued. Federal judges repeatedly blocked attempts to rename the building while litigation proceeds.

September 2026: A partial ceiling collapse in the Grand Foyer prompted safety concerns and immediate inspections.

September 15, 2026: The center’s main theaters were closed and the board approved an extended shutdown to allow thorough safety assessments and repairs.

September–October 2026: Mr. Trump said renovations should not proceed unless the legal fight over renaming is resolved in his favor and suggested reconstruction could be halted if courts reject the renaming effort. On October 2, 2026, the Kennedy Center announced the Honors would move to Capital One Arena on December 7 as a necessary accommodation while the main building remains closed.

The situation remains fluid; further updates are expected as safety assessments and legal proceedings continue.
