Two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, departed Chengdu early Sunday for their new home at Zoo Atlanta, continuing Beijing’s long‑running practice of “panda diplomacy” to strengthen cultural and scientific ties abroad.
China’s state news agency Xinhua reported the pair left Chengdu at 2:55 a.m. local time, just a day after Chinese leader Xi Jinping concluded a state visit to Washington. During the visit, Xi and the U.S. president agreed on steps intended to ease bilateral tensions, including a temporary trade truce and plans for closer cooperation on emerging technologies.

The Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base held a farewell ceremony and prepared a detailed transportation plan for the transfer. The plan included packing fresh bamboo shoots and apples for the flight and having veterinarians and keepers travel with the animals. Those Chinese veterinarians and breeders are scheduled to remain at Zoo Atlanta while the pandas undergo arrival quarantine.
Zoo Atlanta staff and the Chinese team held extensive online and in‑person meetings about upgrading the pandas’ exhibit. Xinhua said the renovation expands indoor activity space and adds features such as natural habitats, stone platforms and pools to give the pandas more enrichment and opportunities for exploration.

Ping Ping (born March 17, 2020) — whose name means “peace” — is noted for the large black eye patches and a particular skill for climbing trees. Fu Shuang (born October 18, seven months later) — meaning “double blessings” — is described as having a small tuft of fur on her head, a slightly protruding forehead and an aptitude for finding food.
Zookeepers at the Chengdu Research Base selected the pair after evaluating age, health, genetics and temperament. "They should be docile and like each other, and hopefully be able to mate naturally," deputy director Li Mingxi told Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.
Ping Ping and Fu Shuang were quarantined for a month with live‑in carers and were acclimated to their travel crates and loud noises to prepare them for the flight. Zoo Atlanta previously hosted a breeding pair, Lun Lun and Yang Yang, which produced seven cubs between 2006 and 2016 before returning to Chengdu.
China’s ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, posted photos of the pandas on X late Saturday and wrote: “Get ready to greet our two fluffy stars!”
Chinese officials said the exchange will include academic and cultural cooperation aimed at enhancing mutual understanding between the peoples of China and the United States. The transfer also follows a recent reopening of U.S. panda programs: two giant pandas arrived in San Diego in June 2024 and another pair later went to the National Zoo in Washington.
