The Air Force's North Star Readiness Campaign brings AFGSC, AFMC and DLA together to speed parts, engineering and depot work for B-52 and B-1 bombers. Lateral shipments that once took a week can now arrive in two to three days, reducing downtime. Reported mission-impacting part problems have dropped from 450+ to about 160, letting units focus on backorders and trends while modernization programs continue.

The U.S. Air Force has launched the North Star Readiness Campaign to increase the number of mission-capable B-52 Stratofortress and B-1 Lancer bombers by speeding parts deliveries, expanding engineering support and shortening depot maintenance cycles.

Announced Tuesday, the initiative is a joint effort led by Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) in coordination with Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) and the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). The campaign aligns operators, acquisition and sustainment specialists and logistics partners to remove supply-chain and maintenance bottlenecks.

'The North Star Readiness Campaign is our commitment to ensuring the warfighter has the nation's bomber force ready to go at a moment's notice,' Gen. S.L. Davis, commander of AFGSC, said in the release.

Concrete process changes under the campaign include accelerating lateral shipments of parts so units receive needed components in two to three days rather than a week or more. The faster flow of parts and engineering support reduces aircraft downtime and speeds repairs.

'Strengthening the supply chain and engineering support means maintenance is faster and less complex,' Matt Miller, executive director of the Logistics and Engineering directorate at AFGSC, said. 'It ensures these critical aircraft remain a credible strategic asset for decades to come.'

The campaign specifically targets B-1 sustainment by prioritizing critical structural and avionics components and working with AFMC and DLA to compress depot-level maintenance timelines. Since North Star began, reported mission-impacting part problems have fallen from more than 450 to roughly 160, enabling units to shift attention from crisis fixes to managing backorders and spotting emerging failure trends.

Ongoing and new modernization programs—overseen by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition and AFMC—are being coordinated through North Star so upgrades and sustainment proceed in step. The announcement also clarified that the B-2 Spirit will be maintained for combat effectiveness until the B-21 Raider reaches full operational capability.

Why it matters: By removing logistical barriers and speeding engineering and depot support, the campaign aims to improve bomber availability for global operations and maintain long-range strike credibility.
