Investigators' Account

Police and local media, citing remarks from New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick, say the attack appeared to be a targeted assault on a 26-year-old man. According to authorities, the 26-year-old ran into the restaurant and collapsed while the shooter followed him inside and continued firing, striking bystanders in the foyer.

"The suspect left the scene, then turned around and came back before leaving again," Chief Kirkpatrick said, per local reports.

Officials noted the three surviving victims were visitors to New Orleans. The long-standing Dooky Chase establishment — reported to have been in operation for 85 years — had not previously experienced a similar incident, authorities said.
