Police responded to multiple 911 calls around 5:27 p.m. Thursday after reports of a knife-wielding man inside NewYork‑Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. The suspect barricaded himself on the eighth floor with an elderly patient and a security guard, and officers say he threatened and injured people. Knife-Wielding Suspect Shot Dead by NYPD Inside NewYork‑Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital

Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting Thursday evening inside NewYork‑Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital that left a knife-wielding suspect dead.
What Happened
NYPD Brooklyn South Commanding Officer Assistant Chief Charles Minch said police responded to multiple 911 calls around 5:27 p.m. reporting a violent man armed with a knife inside the hospital. Officers located the suspect barricaded in a room on the eighth floor where an elderly patient and a hospital security guard were present.
Minch said the suspect threatened hospital staff, had cut himself and attempted to cut others. Officers reported finding blood throughout the room and around the doorway. Repeated verbal commands to drop the weapon were issued, and officers attempted to deploy Tasers several times without success.
Use Of Deadly Force
According to Minch, when the suspect "advanced toward officers with the weapon in his hand," officers fired their service weapons and struck him. The suspect was pronounced dead a short time later. His identity has not been released.
The knife was recovered at the scene and officers’ body-worn cameras captured the encounter, police said. The hospital referred media inquiries to the NYPD.
Public Safety And Investigation
The NYPD posted on X (formerly Twitter) asking the public to avoid the area of 6th Street and 7th Avenue in Brooklyn "due to a police investigation," warning of delays and heavy traffic. Police said the shooting is under investigation and that body-camera footage and other evidence will be reviewed as part of the departmental inquiry.
"This incident demonstrates the incredibly dangerous situation that our officers encounter every single day," Assistant Chief Minch said, noting that details remained preliminary.
