James Fishback, a Republican candidate for Florida governor, faced widespread online mockery after a filing showed he raised just $950 from Nov. 24 to Dec. 31. The disclosure lists three top donors: Benjamin Salyers ($500), Aaron Baker ($100) and Alexander Munguia ($50). Fishback trails far behind Rep. Byron Donalds in recent polling and has attracted attention for praising Nick Fuentes and making racially charged attacks. The campaign manager said a fundraiser was held after the reporting period, which would not appear in the filing.
Florida GOP Candidate James Fishback Mocked After Raising Just $950 in Early Filing

James Fishback, a Republican candidate for Florida governor who has drawn attention for controversial statements, became the target of widespread online ridicule after a campaign finance filing showed he raised only $950 in the opening days of his campaign.
The disclosure covers Nov. 24 — the day he launched his run — through Dec. 31 of last year and lists total contributions of $950. Florida Politics highlighted three of Fishback’s top reported donors in that filing window: Benjamin Salyers (Palm Bay firefighter) at $500, Aaron Baker (repeat congressional candidate) at $100, and campaign treasurer Alexander Munguia at $50.
Those modest totals stand in stark contrast to polling that shows U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds comfortably ahead in the Republican primary; one recent poll put Donalds roughly 42 points ahead of Fishback. Fishback has also attracted national attention for praising Nick Fuentes, who is widely described as a white nationalist, and for launching racially charged attacks against Rep. Donalds.
Social Media Backlash
Much of the public discussion on Tuesday focused on the fundraising shortfall rather than Fishback’s policy positions. Conservative commentator John Cardillo wrote that the report “would be embarrassingly pathetic for a small city commissioner’s race, let alone FL Gov.” Writer Ian Miles Cheong accused the campaign of being a “grift.”

Fishback’s campaign manager, Emma Wright, sought to rebut the criticism by noting the campaign had held a fundraiser “last Friday,” but observers pointed out that event occurred after the reporting period covered by the filing and therefore would not appear in that disclosure.
What This Means
The low early fundraising figures gave critics easy fodder on social platforms and refocused attention on Fishback’s controversial remarks. Whether the campaign can recover credibly in fundraising or broaden its support beyond a small donor base will be a key question as the race moves forward.
