Child Dies After Being Hit By School Bus Near Fillmore Elementary

A six-year-old first grader from Fillmore Elementary in Oklahoma City died after running into the path of a school bus and being struck on the afternoon of Wednesday, Dec. 3, according to local reports.

The incident occurred at about 3:15 p.m., roughly one block from the school. Local outlets including News9, The Oklahoman and KOCO report the bus had been traveling east on Southwest 51st Street and was turning south onto South Douglas Avenue when the child ran into the vehicle’s path. Three children had just disembarked the bus moments earlier.

Emergency crews transported the child to a hospital, where he later died of his injuries. Neighbors described chaotic and heartbreaking scenes as first responders worked at the scene.

"When I got here, I saw medics working on the child. He appeared, whenever they were putting him in the ambulance, he appeared that he was not moving. He wasn’t conscious at all," Orlando Bonilla, who lives across the street, told News9. "It was devastating to see a child go that young."

Another witness, parent Michael Morgan, said, "I wouldn’t know how to take that if one of my kids was run over by a school bus like that. That is very sad and like I said, I’m praying for the family."

Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) issued a statement saying the district was "heartbroken" and confirmed that a Fillmore first-grade student was struck by an OKCPS school bus a short distance from the school shortly after dismissal. The district said that despite the efforts of first responders and medical personnel, the student has passed away and that counselors and additional support staff will be available on site to help students and staff cope.

The Oklahoma City Police Department said the incident is under investigation and that fault will be determined as part of that probe, The Oklahoman reported. PEOPLE has contacted OKCPD, Oklahoma City Public Schools and Fillmore Elementary for comment.
