Student Calina Yu Fatally Struck By School District Maintenance Vehicle Near Stone Bridge High

On Jan. 13 at about 9:13 a.m., student Calina Yu was fatally struck by a Loudoun County Public Schools maintenance vehicle near Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn, Va. The district employee driving the vehicle remained at the scene and the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is investigating. Classmates and neighbors have created a memorial and are calling for improved safety measures at the intersection. School officials said the community is heartbroken and are offering support to students and staff.

A high school student, identified as Calina Yu, was killed after being struck by a Loudoun County Public Schools maintenance vehicle near Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn, Virginia, on Jan. 13. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded at approximately 9:13 a.m. to the intersection of Claiborne Parkway and Portsmouth Boulevard, where they found the female victim. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Driver, Investigation and Response

Authorities said the vehicle was driven by a Loudoun County Public Schools employee who was operating a district maintenance vehicle. The driver remained at the scene following the collision. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an active investigation and has not released additional details.

Community Reaction

Classmates, neighbors and community members have created a makeshift memorial of candles, flowers and teddy bears near the intersection. The memorial is close to Stone Bridge High School, where Yu was a student.

“She was very nice, and she was always down to talk to anyone, very kind,” said 15-year-old Lukas Domeneck, a neighbor and classmate. Another classmate described Yu as being full of joy and quick to smile and hug friends.

School Statement and Safety Concerns

In a message sent to parents and staff, Principal Timothy Flynn said the school community is "heartbroken" and reminded families that traumatic events can bring a wide range of emotions. Flynn emphasized that the safety, well-being and emotional health of students and staff remain the school's highest priorities.

Some residents told local media they have long been concerned about pedestrian safety at the intersection and urged additional measures, such as a crossing guard, improved lighting and clearer signage.
