Human Remains Found at Southcrest Property Linked to Homicide Investigation

San Diego — Investigators are treating 74-year-old Dwight William Rhone as a person of interest after human remains were discovered at a property in the Southcrest neighborhood where he once lived, law enforcement sources said Wednesday.

The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that the property on Newton Avenue was searched on Tuesday and that human remains were located, but it did not provide additional details or announce any charges related to those remains.

“A person of interest connected to an ongoing investigation,” the district attorney’s office said, identifying Rhone by name.

Law enforcement sources familiar with the probe told NBC News that multiple human remains were recovered. The search was conducted by the California Highway Patrol and the FBI, and the San Diego Police Department’s Cold Case/Missing Persons Unit assisted, the district attorney’s office said. In a statement, the FBI described the operation as part of a “cold case investigation.”

San Diego police said detectives will work with the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office to identify the remains and determine causes of death.

Rhone has been in custody since Dec. 5, 2024. Authorities arrested him on a murder charge after 54-year-old Bernardo Moreno was found fatally shot on Interstate 5 on Oct. 18, 2023; the California Highway Patrol reported Moreno’s body had been set on fire.

Online court records in the 2023 shooting case were not available Wednesday night. The district attorney’s office reiterated that Rhone remains in custody in connection with Moreno’s homicide, but it has not announced any charges related to the newly discovered remains.

Rhone was arrested days before he was scheduled to be sentenced in a separate federal case. Court records show he was convicted by a jury of one count each of being a felon in possession of a firearm and being a felon in possession of ammunition and was sentenced to two years in federal prison. Prosecutors noted before sentencing that Rhone has a lengthy criminal history, listing 33 offenses dating from 1963 to 2021.

This report is based on statements from the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office and law enforcement sources, and reporting by NBC News. Investigators continue to work to identify the remains and establish any connection to open investigations.
