8-Year-Old Nearly Electrocuted When Necklace Snagged a Phone Charger; Undergoes Skin Graft as Family Urges Caution

An 8-year-old boy, Lorenzo Lopez, is recovering after a near-fatal electrocution that occurred while he slept with a phone loosely plugged into an extension cord on his bed. Family members say Lorenzo rolled over in his sleep and his chain necklace became caught in the gap between the charger and the extension cord, delivering an electric shock to his neck.

According to Lorenzo and his mother, Kourtney Pendleton, he felt intense heat on his neck and was unable to call out while the current was passing through him. He later managed to remove the chain and sought help. Lorenzo recalled the ordeal as chaotic and frightening:

"It was chaos. I almost thought I was going to die," he said.

A hospital employee reportedly told Lorenzo's mother that if he had not freed the chain, the outcome could have been fatal. Lorenzo was transported to the hospital, where doctors performed a skin graft to treat the burn injury to his neck. The family says Lorenzo is in considerable pain but remains courageous and responsive to care.

Pendleton created a GoFundMe to help cover medical and related expenses and has posted updates on Lorenzo's condition. The family expects Lorenzo to remain under medical care for about two weeks following the surgery. Pendleton has also used the experience to warn other parents about the risks of leaving electronic devices and loose cords in children’s beds.

Safety reminder: Loose jewelry, chargers, extension cords and other electronics can present serious hazards, especially when items can shift and become trapped. Families are advised to keep devices unplugged or out of beds, secure cords, and avoid wearing metal jewelry near plugged-in electronics.
