Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese quietly married his partner, Jodie Haydon, in an intimate ceremony on Saturday at The Lodge, the official prime ministerial residence in Canberra. Albanese is the first serving Australian federal prime minister to marry while in office in the nation’s 124-year history.

Ceremony highlights

The civil ceremony was held on the grounds of The Lodge in the afternoon with about 60 guests, including several cabinet ministers. There was no media coverage until after the event concluded. The couple wrote their own vows; their dog Toto served as ring bearer and Haydon’s 5-year-old niece, Ella, was the flower girl.

"We are absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends," the couple said in a joint statement.

Albanese, 62, who is divorced and has an adult son, proposed to Haydon, 46, at The Lodge on Valentine’s Day last year. The pair first met at a business dinner in Melbourne in 2020.

They had originally planned a larger celebration prior to a federal election scheduled for May. Albanese had mentioned considering personal friends among the guest list, but strategists in the ruling centre-left Labor Party were concerned that a lavish wedding amid a cost-of-living squeeze could damage the government’s re-election prospects. The couple therefore postponed any larger festivities until after the campaign.

The private wedding took place two days after Parliament rose for the year. Earlier reports that named specific celebrity attendees have been corrected and removed.
