On Thanksgiving afternoon, a dispute between two brothers in Lakewood, California, escalated into gunfire that left one man dead and the other in custody.

What happened

At about 2:40 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 27, deputies responded to a report of a shooting near a vehicle. Officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound beside the car; he was transported to a nearby hospital and later died. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity.

Arrest and investigation

Police detained a man believed to be the victim’s brother after he ran approximately a block and a half from the scene. He was identified as 48-year-old Antonio Ruiz Jr., who is being held on $2 million bail. Investigators say both men were arguing inside the vehicle when shots were fired.

“Investigators learned both the suspect and victim were inside of the vehicle arguing when a shooting occurred,” authorities said. Officials also noted that bystanders in nearby lanes reported hearing the argument and the gunfire.

Lt. Michael Modica said deputies were quick to respond and that the suspect managed to get only a short distance from the scene before being detained.

Next steps

The investigation is ongoing. Ruiz Jr.’s next court date is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 2. It is not yet clear whether he has obtained legal representation.
