Afghanistan condemned a cross-border attack that killed three Chinese workers and wounded a fourth in Tajikistan and pledged full cooperation with Dushanbe to investigate. The Chinese Embassy urged its citizens to avoid or evacuate the border region. Officials on both sides have called for calm while a joint assessment is carried out.

Afghanistan Pledges Cooperation After Drone Strike Kills Three Chinese Workers in Tajikistan

Afghan authorities expressed deep regret and strongly condemned a cross-border attack that killed three Chinese workers and wounded a fourth in Tajikistan. The Afghan Foreign Ministry said it is ready to work closely with Tajikistan to investigate the incident and to share information and technical support.

"This incident involves elements that are trying to create chaos, instability, and distrust between countries in the region," said Foreign Ministry deputy spokesman Hafiz Zia Ahmad Takal. He said Afghanistan "assures full cooperation with the government of Tajikistan and is fully prepared for information exchange, technical cooperation, and joint assessment to find the causes of the incident."

Tajikistan's Foreign Ministry reported that the assault occurred the previous night and originated from territory inside Afghanistan, involving a drone armed with grenades as well as firearms. The statement criticized criminal groups operating from Afghan territory and called on Afghan authorities to ensure security along the shared border.

The Chinese Embassy in Tajikistan urged its nationals to avoid the Tajik–Afghan border region and advised those already in the area to evacuate as soon as possible.

Relations between Tajikistan and Afghanistan have been strained since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, when Dushanbe suspended formal ties. Despite that rupture, there have been tentative signs of a thaw: cross-border markets reopened in 2023 and a Tajik delegation visited Kabul earlier this month.

Investigations and any joint assessments are expected to determine responsibility and motives. Regional officials and diplomatic missions have emphasized the need for calm and cooperation to prevent further escalation as authorities work to establish the facts.
