Hunting Trip Turns Deadly: Man Arrested After Two Brothers Found Shot in Upstate New York Cabin

During a hunting trip in Allegany County, N.Y., an argument among three brothers escalated and, police say, resulted in one brother fatally shooting the other two at a cabin on Botsford Hollow Road late on Nov. 23. Authorities arrested 65-year-old Scot Thompson the following morning and charged him with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of criminal use of a firearm. He is being held in the Allegany County jail as the investigation continues.

Authorities say a hunting trip in Allegany County, New York, ended in tragedy after an argument between three brothers turned deadly.

New York State Police reported that late on Sunday, Nov. 23, an altercation at a hunting cabin on Botsford Hollow Road in the town of Allen left two brothers with fatal gunshot wounds. The deceased are identified as Mark B. Thompson, 70, of Canterbury, Conn., and David E. Thompson, 69, of Port Charlotte, Fla.

Officials say 65-year-old Scot Thompson of Englewood, Fla., allegedly shot his two brothers with a rifle during the dispute. One brother reportedly called 911, but by the time officers arrived both victims were found dead inside the cabin.

Arrest and charges

According to police, Scot Thompson fled the scene in David Thompson’s vehicle. Deputies from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Geneseo Police Department located the vehicle and took Scot Thompson into custody at 8:27 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 24. He was turned over to New York State Police troopers for processing.

Scot Thompson is charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of second-degree criminal use of a firearm. Online jail records indicate he is being held at the Allegany County jail. It was not immediately clear whether he has retained an attorney who can speak on his behalf.

Investigation status

State police described the events and the charges in a public statement. The investigation remains active and ongoing; authorities have not released additional details about a motive or whether more evidence or witnesses are involved.
