Mourners gathered in Tehran on Monday to honor unknown soldiers from the 1980–88 Iran–Iraq war after remains recovered from former battlefields were returned for burial.

The central ceremony in the capital paid tribute to 100 soldiers and drew families, veterans, civilians and senior military officials. Authorities said an additional 200 sets of remains were buried simultaneously in other cities.

Processions through Tehran were marked by chanting, flowers and national flags. Military personnel stood beside coffins draped in Iran's colors as relatives and citizens watched — a solemn recognition of fighters who had been missing for decades.

A moment of closure

The public ceremonies offered relatives and communities a chance to mourn publicly and to acknowledge the human cost of a lengthy and brutal conflict. For many families, the burials provided long-awaited closure and a formal recognition of the sacrifices made during the war.

Note: The remains were reported to have been recovered from former battlefields and identified through post-conflict recovery efforts before the burials took place.
