Shutdown Forces BLS to Cancel October CPI Release; Some Series May Be Issued with November Data

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics canceled the release of October's consumer price index because a government shutdown prevented collection of survey data. The agency cannot retroactively obtain those survey responses but has recovered most nonsurvey inputs for October. Where possible, the BLS plans to publish October 2025 values for affected series together with November 2025 data. The bureau also canceled October's employment report for the same reason.

Shutdown Forces BLS to Cancel October CPI Release; Some Series May Be Issued with November Data

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said Friday it has canceled the scheduled release of October's consumer price index after a recent government shutdown prevented staff from collecting the necessary survey data.

The agency said it cannot retroactively obtain those survey responses. For a subset of indexes that rely on nonsurvey data sources, BLS has been able to recover most of the inputs for October. Where feasible, the agency plans to publish October 2025 values for those series alongside the regular November 2025 release.

The BLS also canceled the release of October's employment report for the same reason.

Missing monthly readings can complicate short-term tracking of inflation and labor-market trends, and analysts will need to account for the gap when assessing recent economic movements. The BLS said it will publish recovered nonsurvey series where possible and provide guidance with the November release to help users interpret the combined data.
