First responders across Los Angeles County are mourning after Alhambra Police Officer Alec Sanders, 28, died in the line of duty early Thursday when a vehicle pursuit ended in a violent collision.

Officers began pursuing an SUV containing three people at about 3:00 a.m. During the chase, the suspect vehicle collided with Sanders’ patrol SUV. The impact was severe: a female passenger in the suspect vehicle was ejected and later pronounced dead at the scene.

The front of Sanders’ patrol vehicle was crushed and the airbags deployed. Responding officers found Sanders unconscious and not breathing inside his vehicle. He was transported roughly four miles to Los Angeles General Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead several hours later.

Department statement and service

Alhambra Police Chief Garrett Kennedy said Sanders had volunteered to cover an overnight shift that night. The department described him as “a dedicated public servant, a trusted partner, and a caring friend,” noting his reliability, discipline and commitment to service.

“He answered the call to serve and protect, and he did so with honor, integrity, and courage. His sacrifice will forever be remembered,” the department wrote in a statement.

Sanders joined the Alhambra Police Department in April 2025 after serving one year with the Long Beach Police Department.

Honors and survivors

A somber procession accompanied Sanders’ body to the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office. Video and on-scene reports showed dozens of officers walking behind the transport van while additional police and fire personnel lined the street outside the hospital to pay their respects.

Sanders is survived by his fiancée, his parents and two younger siblings. The department asked the public to keep his family, loved ones and coworkers in their thoughts and expressed gratitude for support from law enforcement partners and the community.
