Off-Duty ICE Agent Fatally Shoots Neighbor Who Fired Rifle at Northridge Apartment Complex

An off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed a neighbor who began firing a rifle into the air late on New Year's Eve, Los Angeles authorities said.
The confrontation occurred at about 10:30 p.m. on December 31 near the intersection of Roscoe Boulevard and Louise Avenue in the Northridge neighborhood. Neighbors reported hearing a sustained burst of gunfire. "It was like a lot of shots," one resident told local media. "It was more than 10 shots...I thought it was something like fireworks."
According to the Los Angeles Police Department and local reports, the off-duty federal agent confronted the man who was firing the rifle and then discharged his weapon. The agent immediately called 911. The shooter was pronounced dead at the scene, and the officer was not injured.
The Los Angeles Police Department has an active investigation underway. Authorities reported no additional injuries related to the incident.
Department of Homeland Security Response
Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin praised the officer's actions. In a statement she described the response as "brave," saying the agent intervened to protect his life and the lives of others and was forced to use his weapon defensively.
"On December 31st, an off-duty ICE Officer bravely responded to an active shooter situation at his apartment complex," McLaughlin said. "Fortunately, our brave officer was not injured while protecting his community."
The incident follows a separate DHS announcement that ICE made arrests over Christmas of individuals the agency described as among the "worst of the worst," which DHS framed as part of efforts to remove dangerous criminals from communities.
The LAPD has not yet released further details and is continuing its investigation. Media outlets and law enforcement indicated they are gathering witness statements and evidence at the scene.
