A single-vehicle rollover early on Nov. 17 in Benton, Kansas, claimed the life of 27-year-old Harley R. Wright and left her two young sons with serious injuries, authorities said. Relatives, who had grown concerned after the trio failed to arrive at their destination, ultimately located the crash scene before officers.
Crash details
The Butler County Sheriff’s Office reported the crash occurred just after 1 a.m. near NW 30th and NW Tawakoni Road. The Chevrolet Impala involved appeared to have rolled multiple times, and all occupants were reported to have been ejected. Wright was found outside the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Her sons, ages 5 and 6, were also found outside the car and transported to a Wichita hospital with serious injuries.
Family response
Wright had left a family gathering at about 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 16 to drive the children to El Dorado. When they did not arrive, relatives asked police to perform a welfare check; family members located the crash site before officers arrived.
"We think she got up and was trying to find her kids and, you know, talk to them. It was a lot to see," said Hayley, Wright’s sister, describing the scene.
Fundraiser and support
A GoFundMe has been created to help cover memorial expenses and support the boys during their recovery. The fundraiser organizer wrote that the children are stable and recovering and appealed for emotional and financial support as the family copes with the sudden loss.
"While we mourn the loss of Harley, we are thankful that her two boys... are stable and recovering well. They will need immense love and support in the days and months ahead," the organizer said.
Investigation
The Butler County Sheriff’s Office said the crash remains under investigation. No additional details about the cause or whether charges will be filed have been released at this time.
