A 29-year-old Milwaukee father, identified by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner as D’monte M. Owens, died after his vehicle was struck in a two-vehicle collision on the evening of Jan. 7. The crash occurred near South 76th Street and West Morgan Avenue; the other driver, 21, was taken into custody and is suspected of driving under the influence.

Crash Details

According to local affiliates WISN, WITI and WDJT, the collision happened around 7:20 p.m. Authorities say one vehicle attempted a left turn while another was traveling straight through the intersection when the vehicles collided. Owens was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The 21-year-old driver remained in custody and faces possible charges pending the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office review.

Family and Community Reaction

Owens’ wife shared that the couple had been days away from celebrating his 30th birthday and had planned an overseas trip to mark their wedding. "He was the best father in the world," she told WISN, noting that Owens leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter.

"He loved that baby so much, I think that is why I hurt so much, man, because he loved her so much," Owens’ brother, Antwan Sterling, said. "He did everything right and it just hurts, bro, because that is my only brother, I don't have nobody else."

On New Year’s Eve, Owens posted on Facebook reflecting on the milestones he had reached in 2024, including finishing school and proposing to his partner. Family members and neighbors have expressed shock and grief at the sudden loss.

Investigators are working to determine the full sequence of events that led to the collision. The Milwaukee Police Department had not immediately responded to requests for comment. The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office will review evidence before formal charges are announced. The Medical Examiner’s office confirmed Owens’ identity to PEOPLE.
