Two killed, three injured in Newark mass shooting
Two people were fatally shot on Saturday evening, Nov. 15, in Newark, New Jersey. The victims — a 10-year-old boy and a 21-year-old woman — were taken to University Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
The shooting occurred at about 7:00 p.m. on the 300 block of Chancellor Avenue. Three other people were shot and injured: an 11-year-old boy, a 19-year-old man and a 60-year-old man. Authorities reported that all three injured individuals are in stable condition.
The Essex County Sheriff's Office has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest as investigators continue to probe the incident. Officials have not immediately identified any suspects.
Local reporting from NJ.com described the area around Chancellor Avenue as largely residential, with many single-family homes. Residents of an apartment building on nearby Leslie Street were temporarily prevented from returning to their units while police processed the scene. Neighbors told reporters they heard multiple gunshots and "a lot of screaming," with one witness estimating more than six shots.
Mayor Ras Baraka called the events "a dark and devastating day in Newark," referencing this shooting and a separate earlier tragedy that day. He said the city will work with the prosecutor's office, state and federal partners to pursue justice and urged anyone responsible to turn themselves in.
People magazine contacted the Essex County Sheriff's Office for additional comment on Sunday, Nov. 16, but had not received an immediate response.
What officials are asking: Anyone with information is asked to contact the Essex County Sheriff's Office. A reward of $10,000 has been offered for tips that help secure an arrest.
