A Sydney suburb is grieving after a 33-year-old woman, eight months pregnant, was killed when a two-vehicle crash on Nov. 14 pushed a car into her as she walked with her family.
Police in New South Wales say the woman was walking with her husband and their 3-year-old child at about 8:00 p.m. on Friday in Hornsby when a Kia slowed near the entrance to a parking garage to allow the family to cross. A white BMW allegedly struck the rear of the Kia, forcing it into the woman. She and her unborn child were pronounced deceased, police said.
The BMW was driven by a 19-year-old man and the Kia by a 48-year-old man. Neither vehicle carried other passengers. Both drivers were taken to Hornsby Hospital for mandatory testing; authorities reported no serious injuries.
"As a result of that crash, the Kia impacted with a 33-year-old female," Assistant Commissioner David Driver said at a press conference. "As a result of that impact, she's now deceased, and very sadly, she was also eight months pregnant, and her unborn child has also died."
Police arrested the 19-year-old at about 12:45 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15, at a home in Wahroonga. He has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death and causing the loss of a fetus in connection with the pregnant woman's death; his identity has not been released. He was refused bail and was due to appear in court on Nov. 16.
Assistant Commissioner Driver described the scene as confronting for emergency personnel, noting the particular difficulty when children and fatalities are involved. First responders provided aid at the scene and were deeply affected by the incident.
Local residents have left flowers and messages at the scene. One card reported by News.com.au read: "Words can't describe how sorry I am that this has happened to you... I pray for you and your little one, that you are held with love as you leave this world."
New South Wales Police's Crash Investigation Unit has opened an inquiry and is asking anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact authorities to assist their investigation.
