Former Spanish Football Chief Pelted with Eggs at Book Launch

The disgraced former president of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, was struck by eggs thrown by a man identified by Spanish media as his uncle while promoting his new book, Matar a Rubiales.

The incident occurred as Rubiales spoke about the fallout from the August 2023 World Cup episode in which he kissed Spain player Jenni Hermoso; Hermoso says the kiss was not consensual. Her teammates refused to return to international duty until Rubiales stepped down, and he resigned in September 2023.

In his book — and in reporting cited by The Telegraph — Rubiales denies wrongdoing and blames what he calls "armchair feminists" and "wokeness" for his downfall. In February 2025 he was found guilty of sexual assault.

During the event, a member of the audience began shouting and threw an egg at Rubiales. He avoided the first projectile, but a second egg struck him in the back. Rubiales then pursued the attacker as the man tried to flee; police detained and arrested him outside the venue. Spanish outlets later reported the assailant was Rubiales' uncle.

The episode highlights the enduring public backlash surrounding the World Cup incident and Rubiales' subsequent legal and reputational consequences.
