Spanish pediatrician and influencer Jorge García‑Dihinx, 55, and his wife Natalia Román were among three people killed in a powerful avalanche in the Pyrenees on Dec. 29. A fractured ice slab near 9,000 feet triggered the slide, which covered hundreds of acres and dumped dozens of feet of snow. A fourth person was airlifted with hypothermia and two others escaped uninjured. García‑Dihinx had more than 375,000 Instagram followers and ran the ski‑conditions blog La Meteo Que Viene.

Spanish pediatrician and social media influencer Jorge García‑Dihinx, 55, and his wife, Natalia Román, were among three people killed on Dec. 29 after a powerful avalanche struck high in the Pyrenees, the mountain range that forms part of the border between Spain and France.

García‑Dihinx, who maintained a large online following of more than 375,000 Instagram followers and regularly shared health advice, was also an avid skier and ran the blog La Meteo Que Viene ("The Weather That’s Coming"), which provided updates on ski conditions across Spain.

Local outlets Heraldo de Aragón, ABC Aragón and El País reported that the avalanche was triggered early in the afternoon by a fractured slab of ice near 9,000 feet (about 3,000 meters) above sea level. The slide moved rapidly across hundreds of acres, dumping dozens of feet of snow and sweeping experienced skiers down the slope.

Authorities and rescue teams confirmed that three experienced skiers—Jorge García‑Dihinx, Natalia Román and Eneko Arrastua—were killed when the slab released. A fourth person, a woman showing symptoms of hypothermia, was airlifted from the scene for urgent medical care, while two other people caught in the slide escaped without physical injury.

In an Instagram exchange on Dec. 15, García‑Dihinx addressed followers who asked why he embraced the risks of intense skiing:

“We go to the mountains for moments like these. At 3,000 meters, while the modern world remains below, up there you're only focused on the next step — these are moments of absolute attention to the present moment.”

His apparent final Instagram post, published Dec. 26, was a short video about why heart attack risk rises on Christmas Eve. In the hours after the avalanche, many followers left tributes beneath that post.

Rescue Response and Investigation

Local emergency services and mountain rescue teams responded to the avalanche zone, which authorities described as high‑altitude terrain where a fractured ice slab produced a large, fast-moving slide. Investigations into the precise circumstances and any safety advisories for the area were ongoing following the incident.
