Fields' Early TD Can't Mask Jets' Passing Woes in 27-14 Loss to Patriots

Justin Fields opened with a 14-play drive and a 5-yard rushing touchdown, finishing as the Jets’ leading rusher (67 yards). After that, New York’s offense stalled — Fields completed just 15 of 26 passes for 116 yards — and the Patriots scored 21 unanswered points to win 27-14. The loss drops the Jets to 2-8 and renews questions about the team’s passing attack and quarterback situation. Coach Aaron Glenn praised some positives but warned the team can’t rely on using Fields primarily as a runner.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass.

Justin Fields used his legs to give the New York Jets an early edge — then the offense stalled and New England pulled away in a 27-14 victory Thursday night.

Fields ran five times for 28 yards on the opening drive, finishing that possession with a 5-yard touchdown that capped a 14-play march and marked the Jets' first game-opening touchdown since the end of last season. He ended the night as New York’s leading rusher with 67 yards, but offered little as a passer, completing 15 of 26 attempts for 116 yards and one touchdown.

“We were getting good plays. Run game was good. O-line was controlling the line of scrimmage, and everybody was doing their job,” Fields said. “So, that first drive, we came out hot and punched it in.”

After that bright start, the Jets’ offense went cold. Fields didn’t run in the second quarter and New York (2-8) went three-and-out on three straight possessions, allowing the Patriots (9-2) to seize momentum and put together a 21-point run en route to their eighth straight win. New England also missed a field goal in the stretch.

“I felt like if we get a fast start we’ll be in a good position. And Justin ran the ball quite a bit,” coach Aaron Glenn said. “The thing is, we can’t put Justin in a situation where he’s a running back, and I think we all know that, because we will put him in harm’s way.”

The defeat snapped a two-game winning streak that had eased some of the early-season gloom after New York began the year with seven straight losses. The Jets’ passing production remains a major concern: they’ve averaged just 140 net passing yards through 10 games (Fields started nine), and Fields has been held to fewer than 60 passing yards in four contests this season.

“There were some good things — really good things,” Glenn added. “I thought he put some balls out there. We’ve got to have some guys that make some plays for him, too.”

Fields is averaging 5.4 yards per carry this season, and he reiterated his willingness to do whatever helps the team: “Whatever I have to do to get this team as successful as can be and for us to reach our highest potential, I’m willing to do whatever. So if that’s me running the ball, that’s what it is.”

Despite the early rushing success, New York’s inability to sustain drives through the air — and a lack of consistent playmakers downfield — left the Jets unable to keep pace with New England in a game that exposed lingering questions about the team’s quarterback situation.
