Northern lights return to the DMV for a second night

WASHINGTON — For the second consecutive night, the northern lights illuminated skies over Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. A geomagnetic storm produced vivid bands of purple, pink, blue and green that were visible across the region.

In Mount Airy, Maryland, observers reported the aurora glowing close to low clouds shortly after sunset, creating dramatic contrasts captured in several photographs. Across West Virginia, many viewers recorded sweeping displays with particularly intense pink tones lighting up wide sections of the sky.

Reader-submitted images and videos—many including timestamps or location notes—show the variety of colors and formations seen from neighborhoods, parks and rural overlooks throughout the DMV and neighboring West Virginia. Weather and geomagnetic forecasts may change as the storm evolves; clear, dark skies offer the best viewing opportunities.
