New Mexico Launches Seven Specialty-Crop Projects with More Than $600K in Funding Through 2028

The New Mexico Department of Agriculture is funding seven specialty-crop projects with more than $600,000 provided through the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program through 2028. Projects focus on apples, lavender, wine grapes, value-added foods, supply-chain efficiency, nutrition-focused small-scale production and outreach to rural families, farmers and youth. The program supports research, education and market development to strengthen specialty-crop production and increase consumer awareness across New Mexico.

ALBUQUERQUE — New Mexico Department of Agriculture launches seven specialty-crop initiatives

The New Mexico Department of Agriculture is rolling out seven projects this fall to strengthen the state's specialty-crop sector. Backed by the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program, the initiatives will receive more than $600,000 in funding that will run through 2028 to support research, education and market development across the state.

  • Enhancing Awareness of the Benefits of Specialty Crops for Rural New Mexico Families, Farmers, and Youth — Drives education and outreach to increase consumption and understanding of specialty crops in rural communities.
  • Sembrando Salud: Promoting Health through Small-Scale Production of Specialty Vegetables and Culinary/Medicinal Herbs — Integrates health promotion and food-security goals by supporting small-scale production and community nutrition initiatives.
  • New Mexico Wine Grape Awareness & Interaction — Promotes consumer engagement and raises awareness of the state’s wine-grape industry and its economic potential.
