U.S. Official: Kazakhstan Expected to Join Abraham Accords — Announcement Likely During Meeting with Trump

Kazakhstan is reported to be set to join the Abraham Accords, with a formal announcement expected during a meeting between President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and former President Donald Trump. The Accords, launched in 2020, currently include the UAE, Bahrain and Morocco; Sudan signed a 2021 declaration but domestic unrest stalled progress. U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said he would return to Washington to announce the accession, and a U.S. official suggested the move could promote wider regional cooperation. Additional meetings with Syrian and Saudi representatives are also reported, underscoring evolving diplomatic efforts.

Kazakhstan poised to join Abraham Accords, U.S. officials say

U.S. officials told Fox News on Thursday that Kazakhstan is expected to join the Abraham Accords, a series of normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab and Muslim-majority countries. A formal announcement is reportedly anticipated in conjunction with a meeting between Kazakhstan’s president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and former President Donald Trump.

The Abraham Accords were first signed in 2020. To date, the agreements have led to formal diplomatic normalization with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco. Sudan also signed a U.S.-brokered declaration in January 2021, but efforts to convert that declaration into full diplomatic ties have been stalled by internal political unrest.

U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, told Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier that he planned to return to Washington, D.C., on Thursday night to announce the accession of another country to the accords. Witkoff made the remark while speaking at the America Business Forum in Miami.

“This is going to show that the Abraham Accords is a club that many countries want to be a member of and it will be a step for turning the page on the war in Gaza and moving forward toward more peace and cooperation in the region,” a U.S. official told Axios.

Reports indicate Kazakhstan’s president may confirm the move during his meeting with former President Trump. The media coverage also notes ongoing diplomatic outreach to other regional players: Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, is reportedly scheduled to meet with Trump at the White House next week, and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is expected to meet with Trump on Nov. 18.

At this stage, the reports describe an expected accession rather than a completed, formally ratified agreement. Observers say any new membership would expand the Accords’ reach and could signal shifting diplomatic dynamics across the Middle East and Central Asia.
