Angelina Jolie posted Google Earth comparisons showing large-scale destruction across Gaza and urged urgent humanitarian support ahead of winter. She cited UNOSAT figures indicating 82% of structures were damaged as of June 16, 2026, and said 1.98 million people (94% of Gaza’s population) now need shelter assistance. Aid groups warn shelter conditions are critical, funding is insufficient, and access remains restricted.
Angelina Jolie Posts Google Earth Images of Gaza’s Devastated Neighborhoods, Urges Urgent Winter Aid

Angelina Jolie posted side-by-side Google Earth images on her Instagram and X accounts comparing how Gaza neighborhoods looked in 2022 with how they appear now, and used the images to call for expanded shelter, medical supplies, and humanitarian assistance ahead of winter.
Satellite Evidence and Scale of Damage
The images—showing areas in Rafah, Khan Younis and Gaza City—contrast intact buildings in 2022 with scenes of widespread destruction in later images. Jolie cited a U.N. satellite analysis (UNOSAT) reporting that, as of June 16, 2026, 82% of Gaza's structures had been damaged. UNOSAT estimated 201,290 damaged structures in total, of which 134,422 were classified as destroyed and 13,848 as severely damaged.
Humanitarian Needs Ahead Of Winter
Jolie warned that 1.98 million people—about 94% of Gaza’s population—now require shelter assistance as winter approaches, and that aid and shelter materials continue to face restrictions and delays. The Shelter Cluster, a coalition led by the Norwegian Refugee Council, reported that 58% of surveyed households live in critical or catastrophic shelter conditions; only 10% reported receiving shelter or household aid in the previous month.
"You can now open Google Earth and see what was done to Gaza," Jolie wrote. "What it cannot show is what it means to live among it, what happened to the families who were killed, and what life is like for those who survived."
Funding, Access, And Recent Developments
The Shelter Cluster appealed for $165 million to meet the most urgent winter needs and had received $44 million by August, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council. Humanitarian groups say Israel has recently allowed increased amounts of shelter materials into Gaza, but access remains intermittent and shipments have faced delays.
Timing Of The Imagery
Updated Google images sparked strong reactions on social media in late September, though some of the photos are months old. Al Jazeera reported that images of Rafah were taken on February 25, while other analyses dated some northern Gaza photos to 2024 and 2025. Google confirmed that many of the images were not captured in the immediate days prior to the social media reactions.
Conflict Context
The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when militants from Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people (predominantly civilians) and taking roughly 250 hostages. Israel's subsequent military operations have resulted in very high Palestinian casualties; Gaza's Health Ministry reports more than 74,000 deaths but does not distinguish between combatants and civilians. Israel says Hamas bears responsibility for civilian deaths because it operates in populated areas. A truce was declared on October 10, 2025, but reporting since then has indicated continued strikes and intermittent openings of border crossings.
Jolie's Advocacy And Call To Action
Jolie, 51, served for more than two decades as a goodwill ambassador and later special envoy for the U.N. refugee agency before stepping down in 2022 to focus on broader humanitarian and human rights work. Since the war began she has condemned the October 7 attack as an act of terror while also arguing that it does not justify killing civilians. In her recent posts she urged that "people need shelter before winter," that humanitarian aid reach civilians at the scale required, and that hospitals receive urgent medical supplies.
What Happens Next Matters. Jolie and humanitarian agencies say the immediate priorities are scaled-up, sustained humanitarian access; timely delivery of shelter materials, winter supplies and medical goods; and funding to support urgent reconstruction and relief efforts.
